Question:

Why do I need my air ducts cleaned?

Air-ducts can and will get dirty over time, and since the air in being circulated throughout the house, it affects the entire indoor air quality the occupants breath. Some may be more susceptible to the quality of the air, especially kids, the elderly, and those who suffers from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory health conditions. Cleaning the air ducts can positively address these issues.

In addition, clean air ducts help your HVAC system to work more efficiently, resulting in lower energy bills, hence saving you money over time.

Question:

How and why the air ducts get dirty?

The HVAC system is a "breathing" system, just like the lungs in our body. It takes air in (through the return ducts) and breathes it out (through the supply ducts). When the return ducts suck the indoor air inside, they also suck air pollutants, chemicals, smoke, pets hair, dust, and other contaminants that occupants use as part of their life routine.

As the HVAC system re-circulates the air few times every day, over time it will build-up dust and other contaminants deep inside the air ducts.

Question:

How often should I get my air duct cleaned?

It is suggested by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) to have the air ducts cleaned every 3-5 years, though there is no actual formula to determine the exact frequency because it depends on several factors, some of which we detailed below, not the least of which is the preference of the homeowner.

So, if you have not had your air ducts professionally cleaned in the last 3-5 years, you most likely need to consider having them serviced. By "professionally cleaned" we mean using special equipment that allows skilled technicians reach deep inside the air ducts, and be able to scrub and remove the dust and debris that has been accumulating deep inside the air ducts for many years. We also recommend to do air duct cleaning prior to occupancy of a new home, if you went through remodeling or renovation resulting in massive dust (like sanding new hardwood floors or drywalls), or if you have a rental property and you are in a period where tenants left and new tenants just about to enter.

Question:

How do I know if it's time for my air ducts to be cleaned?

Few things you can check yourself to determine if air duct cleaning is needed:

  1. Visual Inspection - look inside your vent registers, especially inside your HVAC returns (you can use flashlight or remove the register / cover). If you see dust buildup, debris, or even mold inside and/or around the ducts or around the wall supply cover then it's time for an air duct cleaning.

  2. If you have floor vents, remove the cover and look inside.

  3. If your system(s) have not been cleaned by professionals in the last 3-5 years, you most likely need to have it serviced.

  4. If your home went through construction, remodeling or renovation projects (especially if your floors or drywalls were sanded), a lot of dust and dirt is sucked inside the system through the returns and need to be cleaned.

  5. In many cases customers are considering to go through the air duct cleaning service when they start to have headaches, itchy eyes, and often coughing while at home - these might be signs of poor indoor air quality, and air ducts cleaning service my help to positively address these issues.

Question:

What may be the factors that increase the need of air duct cleaning?

Some factors that may increase the need for air duct cleaning are:

  • Poor indoor air quality resulting in occupants having headaches and/or itchy eyes

  • Occupants with asthma, allergies, sinus infections, or other respiratory health conditions

  • After home remodeling projects or renovation (especially after sanding floors and/or drywalls)

  • Smoking occupants

  • Pets - they are great and we all love our furry friends, but they can shed a lot of hair

Question:

Do you handle mold and mildew?

Yes we do. Our technicians are trained to look for and detect any mold and mildew that exists in your ducts and/or furnace(s). If such are found, then after thorough air duct cleaning process they will add special anti-bacterial and anti-mold disinfectant by either spray or Fogger directly into the ducts and make sure it's spread all the way deep inside the ducts using special equipment. This process will also handle any bad odor you may have had caused by the mold, and adds some good scent to the air being blown out through the supply vents. The active materials added to the air ducts will continue to work long after the scent is gone.

Important Note: In some cases the reasons for mold and mildew issues may be caused due to a malfunction in your HVAC system. It's recommended to get your HVAC system inspected by a certified HVAC Technician and fix the source of the mold problem before having your air-ducts cleaned. It is also recommended to ask for inspection 6 months after such treatment took place to make sure no new mold or mildew start to build up again.

Question:

What is "Air Negativity Pressure Machine"?

The "Air Negativity Pressure Machine" is a powerful professional vacuum machine, that is being connected by our technicians to the air duct ventilation system (to the air supply, not the returns). The process places the supply duct system under negative pressure that draws air through the system down to this powerful vacuum, forcing dirt, dust and debris to travel down the ducts to the vacuum, removing it from the duct system and leaving it clean.

Normally, the use of this equipment is recommended when the supply vents are visually inspected and signs of dirt and debris are found. In normal and proper HVAC system operating conditions, and when the air-filter is replaced frequently, the supply ducts and vents should not be dirty at all. If there is dirt and debris in the supply ducts, that means these "traveled" from the return ducts, through the HVAC filter, back to the supply vents. This means the air duct system is in fairly poor maintenance condition and in addition to the need to clean all the return vents, it's necessary to clean also all the supply vents.

Question:

What is the difference between "Standard" and "Deep" air duct cleaning?

Standard Cleaning Service - is what we call "maintenance service". It's the ideal situation where the home owner is maintaining the HVAC air duct systems on a regular basis, meaning, having the HVAC air duct system serviced every 3-5 years, and replacing the air-filter regularly. When the HVAC air duct system is maintained in such aforementioned frequency, the amount of dirt and contaminants accumulating inside the ducts are within "normal levels" and the amount of cleaning needed is fairly small and standard service is enough. In such service the air-supply ducts will be serviced by using the air-negativity pressure machine (as explained before). As for the return ducts - we open each and every one of the air duct return grills, examine for the level of contamination, dirt inside and around the registers, etc. and we make sure to clean each and every return duct using power tools, snakes and brushes, cleaning all the registers, replace the HVAC filters, and also clean the return trunk connected to the furnace (if accessible). When done we close all the registers and make sure the HVAC is properly running.

Deep Cleaning Service - in case the HVAC air duct system has not been maintained in the last 5 years, or possibly never been serviced, then we recommend "deep cleaning" service. In such service we open each and every one of the air duct return grills, examine for the level of contamination, dirt inside and around the register, etc. and we make sure to thoroughly clean each and every return duct using power tools, snakes and brushes all the way deep inside the duct up to the furnace. We also take sample photos of before and after the cleaning service so you can see the value of the service. We thoroughly clean all the registers/grills, sanitize all return ducts (as well as floor vents if exist), replace the HVAC filters with new ones, and clean the return trunk in the furnace (if accessible). As for the supply vents - instead of using the air-negativity pressure machine when the supply vents are very dirty and in poor condition, we will open each and every one of them and make sure to thoroughly clean each and every return duct using power tools, snakes and brushes all the way deep inside the duct up to the furnace. When done we close all the registers and make sure the HVAC is properly running.

Question:

How can I tell if the HVAC air duct cleaning was effective and done right?

There are few ways to determine if the HVAC air duct system cleaning was effective, but the best way is to perform a visual inspection before and after the service. With that said, our technicians take sample pictures of a few of the serviced ducts before they start and after they are done. They will show you the pictures so you can see for yourself the difference of how the ducts looked before the cleaning service and how they look after they have been cleaned. What you should expect to see is perfectly cleaned ducts, no dirt, mold, or debris inside.

Question:

Do you use anti-bacterial and anti-microbial materials to sanitize the ducts?

Yes we do. After the technician is done with the duct cleaning, he will use human and pets safe green and environmental friendly anti-bacterial and anti-microbial spray, making sure it's going all the way as deep as possible inside the serviced ducts. This disinfectant also prevents mold and mildew build-up inside the ducts, addressing microbial contamination, and odor control especially when used on nonporous surfaces like HVAC systems.

Question:

How much will it cost to have my HVAC air duct system cleaned?

When you call air duct cleaning companies for a price, we will need to know the following in order to provide you an accurate estimation of your project:

  • The amount of HVAC systems that need to be serviced in your property

  • System accessibility (mainly if furnace is located in a crawl space)

With that said, at Ductor Clean Air we try to make it easy and simple to our customers, as well as transparent as possible to prevent any confusions and misleading information. When you call us for a price, we will ask you a few basic questions to better understand the project scope, and we will do our best to provide you with the most accurate cost estimate we can. Contact Us if you have any questions or need more information.

Question:

How much time will it take to have my HVAC air ducts cleaned?

It depends directly on the amount of HVAC systems need to be serviced. The more HVAC systems you have in your property, the more ducts present and more work effort is required. Most properties have between 1 to 3 HVAC systems, and the entire process (from the time we arrive till the time we leave) typically takes between 2-6 hours, depending on variety of factors some of which were mentioned above.

Question:

Do you touch any electrical or mechanical parts of the furnace?

NO. We do NOT touch either electrical parts nor mechanical parts of the furnace. Our technicians will open the furnace cover and simply clean / vacuum any visible dust and debris, will remove the filter and make sure the return trunk (normally the most dirty part of the system) is completely clean of any dust and debris, replace the filter with a new one and close the furnace back as it was.

If you need any of the furnace or condenser elements to be cleaned (such as the furnace blower, condenser fan, etc.), you will need to call a certified HVAC Technician to take these parts apart, clean, put them back, and test the system for proper operation.

Question:

Do you also move furniture around to get to all vents?

For liability reasons, our company policy does NOT allow our technicians to move any furniture around in order to gain access to all the vents that need to be serviced. Many times clients may have expensive furniture, or expensive decorations and items placed on different furniture that may be damaged by moving them, and for that reason we ask the clients to make sure our technicians have access to all the vents in the property, or they will have to skip and not service those that do not have proper access.

Question:

When should I service and clean my dryer vent?

First step would be visual inspection - look at the dryer outside wall cover and see if it's partially or fully blocked with lint, meaning air cannot freely flow through. Also, many times people realize their dryer vent is clogged when they need multiple drying cycles to fully dry their cloths, or when their dryer will have special indicator for such issue (in modern dryers).

These are simple signs letting you know it is time to get your dryer-vent cleaned.

IMPORTANT NOTE

RISK OF FIRE - The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends cleaning the dryer vent annually because of hundreds of home fires occurring every year in Georgia alone! If your dryer vent is blocked, all of this build-up lint can become a fire hazard. The heat from your dryer can cause the lint to combust, potentially catching your dryer and parts of you home on fire.

Question:

How much will it cost to have my dryer vent cleaned?

There are several factors that affect the cost as well as the duration of the service, such as:

  • System accessibility (mainly if a use of a high ladder is needed)

  • Length of the dryer duct (there will be an additional charge per foot if the dryer duct length is over 10 feet)

  • Can the service be executed from the outside dryer wall vent cover (normally the way it's being done) or it's necessary to service from the inside as well? (pulling out the dryer, disconnecting the back duct, clean the duct from that side, connect the duct back to the dryer, place the dryer back in its place, and make sure it is running properly)

Contact Us and we will be happy to provide you with all the information you need.

Question:

Will you remove a bird nest from my dryer vent?

We LOVE animals and nature, and will do whatever it takes to protect them, therefore, we will NOT remove active bird nest if nest is active. We will remove it only and as long as the nest is EMPTY.
